LESSON 7 - CUSTOMISING FURNITURE AND ADDITIONAL FITTINGS/STRUCTURES
Planning your layout concept with vanspace 3D does not eliminate the unusual slopes, curves and spaces that van conversion brings. That´s why your software is a valuable tool in these beginning stages.
Standard-sized furniture and setups will not fit all of these spaces, so your creative mind is needed during the design concept and the final build, where custom furniture will be needed.
Whilst we have provided over 700 of the most requested furniture and fitting items, it is impossible for us to pre-empt what you need for a particular space. So, instead, we provide options that can be adapted and features to create your own custom items.

USING THE FURNITURE LIBRARY OBJECTS
The Furniture Library has been updated with over 700 of our most popularly requested objects, including multiple variations in most categories and a few combos that we have created.
Select the ALL ITEMS folder to familiarise yourself with everything available, or choose specific folders to refine your search.
The search bar is also available for key searches.
If you see what you need in the Library, drag, drop, and position. You can then adjust the dimensions as needed.
If you are looking to create a basic layout concept, the items and combos are perfect!
TOP TIP! Once you have placed your item and adjusted it to the needed dimensions, make use of the DUPLICATE button if more than 1 is needed.
TOP TIP! Use the MIRROR button to invert your item. It is particularly useful when using corner furniture.
CHECK OUT THESE COMBOS
Select the BUILT-INS folder for mix-and-match storage combinations, or create your own using singular objects.
Select the KITCHEN > DEMO KITCHENS for kitchen combos, or create your own using singular objects.
Select the BATHROOM folder for wetroom combos, or create your own using singular objects.
CUSTOMISING THE PROVIDED FURNITURE AND FITTINGS
Most of the items provided within the Furniture Library are made up of separate components that can be deleted, moved, duplicated, mirrored, and adjusted separately.
Mix and match with components from other items, and apply different solid and transparent materials.
EXAMPLE 1 - As a typical van lifer, I will be working remotely in my Toyota Coaster and would like to create a dedicated working area.
1. I am happy with the conception of the item WORKING DESK, so I will select that and make some changes
2. Adjusted the dimensions
3. Highlighted and deleted the drawers and top shelving
4, Added CUBE SHELVES SMALL and upper Kitchen cabinets
5. Changed the chair for comfort
If you are not finding something that you had in mind, the chances are you will be building this yourself to fit a particular space within the real-life build. Keep scrolling to learn how to build this within the software. 👇️
ADVANCED CUSTOM FURNITURE
The concept of DIY van conversion starts with the understanding that you are designing furniture and fittings to fit the unusual slopes and spaces, not designing the layout to fit around standard-sized furniture.
Of course, your appliances are standard sizes, and placement of these is crucial, but the likelihood is that you will build everything else yourself or have it custom-made. Of course, you may be lucky with kitchen units and shower trays, but even then, everything surrounding will be based on the space that is left.
No matter what, just like in the real-life build, you will create custom furniture within the software, too.
Within the Furniture Library is a SHAPES folder that contains 3D shapes that can be used in 2 different ways.
1. To add to and customise items from within the Furniture Library
2. To create custom furniture from scratch
AVAILABLE 3D BUILDING SHAPES
Each shape can be adjusted by height, width, and length as normal, so think of them as super adjustable, different-shaped building blocks or pieces of wood and metal.

ADVANCED ADDITIONAL FITTINGS & STRUCTURES
Using 3D building shapes as building blocks allows you to create many other internal and external structures.
- Create additional exterior structures if using a custom template ie Overhead cab, High roof, high-top
When using a custom template, you will have used the main box or rectangle cargo area dimensions; use these shapes to add overhead cabs and compartments.
You can also use them to create under-chassis structures if wanting to be very detailed.
- Create High Roofs and Tops
These can be built on pre-made or custom templates, and dragging a transparent material to the bulkhead or roof of the template allows easy access routes.
- Create front cabs
If you are using a custom template and have taken the recommended advice not to select a front cab, use 3D building shapes mixed with items from the Furniture Library to create one if it is an important factor in your layout.
This example layout began as a basic rectangular custom shape with no front cab added. The front cab, all windows, under chassis, wheels, axle and roofing were added in the design area using 3D Building shapes.
- Create internal markers
Use 3D Building Shapes to create small markers to map open sliding door scenarios.
- Internal Structures
If wanting to be extremely detailed, use these shapes internally to create specific structures and other markers that are important to your layout.
